Commencement Ceremonies

A message from the SCHS Commencement Planning Committee:

Hello Graduating Students and Families!

We wanted to reach out to you to provide details regarding our year-end celebrations. Please note there has been a change in date from my previous communication.

The Planning Committee is very pleased to announce that our Commencement Ceremonies this year will now take place on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

To ensure that all of our students have an opportunity to be recognized for their achievements, the June 27th date was carefully chosen as we did not want it to conflict with exams and Eid celebrations that could take place as early as the evening of June 27. This means we cannot have our Commencement Ceremony on June 28th as initially announced.

With June 27th being the day when final marks are submitted by the staff, this will mean that the distribution of official diplomas and mark-based awards, such as Honour Roll, Ontario Scholar and Silver Medal, will not be presented at Commencement 2023. Diplomas and mark-based awards can be picked up at the school during the first week of July (likely Wednesday, July 5th). Awards that are not strictly mark-based, such as scholarships, community awards and department awards will be recognized during the ceremony.

We will need to host two ceremonies based on the very large graduating class of 2023, the school venue capacity limitations (all graduates will receive two tickets), our preference to host our ceremony at our school, and our ability to sell extra tickets to some families.

On June 27, we’ll have ceremonies at 10 AM and at 1 PM:

Commencement Ceremony #1:

Tuesday, June 27, 2023 @ 10:00 AM

Student Last Names A - K only

Commencement Ceremony #2:

Tuesday, June 27, 2023 @ 1:00 PM

Student Last Names L - Z only

There will be a reception in between the two ceremonies to allow for all of our graduates to be together and take pictures.

It is important to note that a Google Form was sent out to all Grade 12 students by Grade 12 student representatives asking if they would prefer to pick the ceremony they attend or separate by alphabetical order, and there was no preference either way.

We're looking forward to celebrating the incredible achievements our students have made at South! We will keep you updated as our planning progresses in the weeks ahead.

See you on the 27th!

Sincerely,

The SCHS Commencement Planning Committee
