Remembrance Contest Winners. Three South Carleton students were recognized for their creative talent at the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Contest Awards Ceremony. The Zone and District Awards were handed out to the winners from Ottawa’s 10 Branches. Kate Calhoun took first place in the Intermediate Essay Competition at the Zone Level (all of Ottawa) while Katelyn Power took first place in the Senior B&W Poster competition at the Zone Level. Charlotte O'Brien placed with her poem. Kate's essay placed 2nd at the District Competition (Eastern Ontario). The winning entries will be framed and will hang on the Front Wall of Honour in the Richmond Legion Hall, for one year. Congratulations to Charlotte, Kate, and Katelyn!
The Richmond Legion promotes and encourages SCHS students to participate in our programs and activities.
The Legion Remembrance Day Poster and Literary Contests are held in November. Cash prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. There is also a Video Contest. Details for all three contests are available in the school. Be a part of Remembrance Week this year.
Students can get their Community Service Hours at the Richmond Legion. Be it a Sunday afternoon Seniors Dinner, Dinner-Dance, or a BBQ, kitchen help is always appreciated. We also need help with our annual poppy drive in November. Join our Volunteers this year.
The Richmond Legion provides Bursaries of $1000.00 from the Poppy Fund. Candidates must live within the Richmond Legion boundary, and have a family affiliation with the Armed Forces or Legion members. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.
A Public-speaking Contest is held in early March. This is your chance to speak out on your topic, and develop your leadership skills.
The Richmond Legion can give you personal accounts of veterans from WWII, the Korean War, and modern-day conflicts. Consider the Legion as a resource to learn about history, first-hand.
