The cold winter weather has arrived as we draw ever closer to a well-deserved holiday break for students and staff. It has been a busy fall so far, with the usual excitement around all the great activities happening here at South Carleton. Our teams are out there winning, our clubs are active, and our students are getting involved! We have had field trips to places near and far, assemblies, Coffee House, outstanding Remembrance Day assemblies, the Dance shows, Art show, and Band concert. Leadership Camp once again hosted over 100 of our students for a successful weekend, and our Link Crew hosted both our grade 8 students and some grade 4, 5, 6s for tours and activities.
This fall has been an exciting time of transition for our new class of grade 9’s, whose Link Crew teachers and student leaders have helped them make the transition to high school, to build social and academic connections between the students and their senior leaders, and to create a sense of comfort and belonging. It is wonderful to see the positive impact this program has had top to bottom in this school. Our returning students have come back a year more mature and closer to graduation and our dedicated and involved staff continues to support their academic success and involvement in many extra-curricular opportunities too. We know as educators that this involvement in the school and the community is highly correlated to success in academics so we continue to look at clubs and teams to support the interests of our students.
South Carleton has had many successes to celebrate this fall, including our spectacular results on EQAO Math last year (ranking top in the board!) and recognition at a provincial level by the Ontario Librarians’ Association for the outstanding positive development of our Library Learning Commons. Our kids continue to win recognition for their achievements though academics, community involvement, and athletics.
With our successes there have been challenges too. As a community, we have come together to support each other through the tragic loss of one of our students to an accident in November. The support from families and other school communities has been tremendous and has helped us move forward; the support for our students and community remain in place as long as we need them.
In 2017 we look ahead to closing first semester with January exams, and starting second semester on Jan 31st. We are currently planning for our Family Night on February 9th where our proud, involved students and staff can show off our programs to the community to help with course planning for next year. We hope to see a full house again this year – keep your eyes open for communication from the school on details! I continue to marvel at the skills and talents of the staff, students and parents in the South Carleton High School community and thank all for your continued support for our wonderful school.
