School Council Spotlight: Riverview Alternative School’s Diversity & Equity Travelling Trolley

School Council Spotlight: Riverview Alternative School’s Diversity & Equity Travelling Trolley
Posted on 05/11/2022

The School Council at Riverview Alternative School supported an innovative tool to share books about equity and diversity with the school community.

The school’s Diversity and Equity team came up with the idea of a travelling book trolley that would provide students with a wide selection of books that could be shared in the classroom and be easily accessible for staff to use in daily instruction. The team, with the assistance of the school’s Librarian, collected a list of Kindergarten-Grade 6 book titles exploring inclusion, anti-racism, gender identity, and themes that reflect and celebrate the diverse identities and voices within the school community.

The Riverview Alternative School Council provided funds for the project, and the trolley is now travelling through the school’s hallways and rolling into the classrooms.

“The cart is used to support our good work with a lens on diversity, equity, belonging and student voice,” says Principal Weiler. “The trolley is met with great enthusiasm from our students. The books have provided a springboard for wonderful classroom discussions, inspired artwork and community building. We’re finding the magic in reading and learning about each other along the way. Everyone is welcome at our school!”
