A Message from PIC: Welcome to Parent Involvement Committee
Posted on 09/06/2022

Good Morning!

The school year is approaching fast. We hope that you and your family enjoyed the summer break. Parents and community members play a vital role in promoting the success of our schools and students, and parental involvement boosts student achievement, increases opportunities and encourages communication.

The Board mandates the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) to be the official voice of parents within the OCDSB and advisory to staff. Membership includes mostly parents, with representation from OCDSB staff, community members and School Board Trustees. Only the parent members and community representatives are voting members. Everyone is welcome to attend PIC meetings.

PIC supports and enhances parent engagement across the District to improve student achievement and well-being. PIC serves an integral role for the District by providing parents with the opportunity to voice their concerns, ideas and challenges. PIC represents all families within the OCDSB. The duties of PIC include:

  • Outreach to parents, recognizing the barriers of time, language, recent immigration, socio-economic status, newness to the system, or other factors;
  • Working collaboratively with the school board to ensure linkages between parents, the Director of Education and trustees;
  • Developing strategies for enhancing parental engagement and outreach;
  • Holding district-wide meetings and encouraging inter-school communications; and
  • Participating in promoting, developing, and implementing grant applications and projects funded under the Ministry of Education Parents Reaching Out (PRO) program.

PIC Meetings

Everyone is welcome to attend PIC meetings. The Committee meets at least six times per year, and meetings are generally held on the second Wednesday of the month from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Details for the meetings are posted on the OCDSB website. Upcoming meeting dates are:

The Parent Conference

Join us on Saturday, November 5th, 2022!

OCDSB is committed to families and community engagement as an essential element in our shared efforts to improve outcomes for children throughout their lives. Our role is to help build capacity by successfully engaging parents and caregivers, strengthening home-school partnerships, and aligning our collective efforts.

The Parents Conference 2022 provides an opportunity to highlight innovation and high-impact strategies for partnering, collaborating, and nurturing familiesʼ partnerships and alliances.

Speaker Series

The PIC supports parent learning and involvement by hosting presentations on topics of interest to parents. Some examples include Raising Resilient Children, Nurturing Critical Thinkers, and Self-Regulation.

Your participation in our schools makes a big difference. Do what works best for you, your child and your family.
