Parent Involvement

Parent Involvement
Parents and caregivers are an important part of student success. There are many ways for you to get involved in your child’s education.

School Council
Every school has a school council comprised of parents and staff representatives.  The school council plays an important role as an advisory body to the school principal.  The school council helps to build a sense of community in the school and helps to build the relationship between parents, educators and the community. As a parent, you can seek election to the school council or you can simply attend council meetings.  Either way, participating in the school council gives is a great way to have a voice in your school community.

Volunteering at School
Parents are active volunteers in our schools.  If you are interested in volunteering, speak you’re your child’s teacher or with the school council or principal about the volunteer opportunities that may be available.  You can also volunteer through ONFE – the Ottawa Network for Education.  ONFE does volunteer screening for the school district.

Parent Involvement Committee
At the OCDSB, we have an active Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) which supports, encourages and enhances parent engagement at the District level. PIC provides parents with the opportunity to voice their concerns, ideas, and challenges while promoting further parent involvement through events such as the OCDSB Speaker Series, annual Parent Conference, publications and more.

OCASC
The Ottawa-Carleton Assembly of School Councils (OCASC) is an umbrella organization for school councils and parents in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) to share information and facilitate communication within the OCDSB communities to enhance the education of all its students. Parenting and Family Literacy Centres
Parenting and Family Literacy Centres are free, school-based programs for parents and caregivers with children from infants to age six. These fun, play-based programs are designed to support your child’s early learning and development and are aligned with the Kindergarten program. They offer a safe, nurturing and stimulating program where children can play and parents can connect with other parents in the community. Learn more here.
