We’re All in this Together

As many of us are aware, the systemic response to COVID-19 has had devastating financial impacts on many families in our community, while others have been very fortunate to maintain their full family income. The Education Foundation is an independent charitable arm of the OCDSB and exists to mitigate financial crises and economic barriers to learning that families face.

Just prior to the COVID-19 school closures, the Education Foundation was in the process of establishing a collaboration with a new fund, which could not have been more timely! The Bridges Over Barriers fund was recently founded by Dr Kwadwo Kyeremanteng and Dr Michael Hartwick in commemoration of their colleague, a critical care physician at the Ottawa Hospital, Dr Rick Hodder. The Education Foundation has announced an initiative to match community donations to the Bridges Over Barriers fund in the amount of up to $20,000 to support families of the OCDSB who experience financial crises.

Referrals are made by school administrators to their school social workers on behalf of, and with the permission of, identified families. However, given the extraordinary scope of need during these challenging times, every donation is highly valued. If you or someone you know would like to extend the contribution that the Education Foundation makes to the Bridges over Barriers fund, donations can be made by following the link:

As a community, we can temper the impacts of these trying times on our neighbors and friends and truly demonstrate we’re all in this together.
