What do I do when my child arrives late or needs to leave early?

If your child arrives late they are to sign in at the main office. In order to sign in we require a written note or verbal consent from you.  If your child needs to leave early they are to sign out at the main office, again with verbal or written consent from you.

What if my child is having difficulties in a course?

The first person to contact is the teacher.  All staff emails are in the format first.lastname@ocdsb.ca .  Department Heads are also available to respond to inquiries concerning curriculum and assessment and evaluation.

When are the formal reporting periods?

A progress report will go home early in the semester to give you a brief indication of your child’s progress.  There is also a mid-term and a final report card issued each semester. First semester dates are November 16th and February 12th and second semester dates are April 23rd and July 10th.

When are Exams?

The exam dates for Semester one are January 25th – January 31st and June 20th – June 26th  for semester two.  Please note that summative evaluations occur during the three weeks leading up to exams.  Any absences during this period must be accompanied by a medical certificate or have the Principal’s approval.  Your child does not need to attend school on days when he/she does not have an exam.

When is course selection?

On-line course selection will begin in February.  Our Guidance Department will work with students throughout the course selection process.  Parents/guardians should consider the student’s achievement and the advice of educators when choosing appropriate courses and/or programs.

The voluntary fee subsidizes our extracurricular programming and events during and after school hours.  Student’s Council Events, Breakfast Club, Grade nine locks and T-Shirts, Awards ceremonies and School-Wide BBQ’s are just a few of the events offered to your child.

Are cell phones allowed to be used in school?

At South we welcome the use of technology, however we recognize that sometimes it can distract from the learning environment.  Cell phones are only to be used in the classroom for educational purposes and with the teacher’s permission.  Texting and phone conversations are only to occur at breaks and during the lunch period.

What if my child’s contact information changes?

Please notify the Main Office if there are any changes ie., phone numbers, email, address.

Messages will be relayed through the Main Office in the event of an urgent family matter.

What if my child gets hurt at school?

In the event of all injuries, big or small, parents will be notified.  If your child gets ill we will contact you and ask that you pick up your child as we do not have the facility to keep an ill child at school.
