International & Indigenous Languages Elementary Program

In-Person and Virtual Language Classes for JK - Grade 8 Students 2024-2025
The Elementary International & Indigenous Languages Program offers students the opportunity to learn to listen, speak, and write in a new language or maintain their home or heritage language. The language classes are available to students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 from all school boards. Prior knowledge of the language is optional to enroll in these classes.

Languages to be offered: Albanian, American Sign Language, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Bengali, Chin, Cantonese, Czech, Dari, Finnish, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Japanese, Kannada, Khmer, Lai, Malayalam, Mandarin (Simplified), Mandarin (Traditional), Marathi, Mongolian, Nepali, Nuer, Pashto, Persian (Farsi), Serbian, Sinhala, Somali, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Tamazight (Berber), Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese

Please note: Classes offered are based on sufficient enrollment. Dates, times, and languages available are subject to change.

How to Register:

Registration deadline for attendance of the full program: August 23, 2024 (*students can still register after this date but they may not be able to attend the full year program). *Due to the processing time for new applicants, students who register after August 23, 2024 will not be able to attend the full language program. In order to start the program on the first day of classes, registration forms must be received before this deadline.

Parents & Guardians will register their children by completing and submitting one of these online registration forms:

Important Registration Information:

Please complete ONE registration form per child. In case you would like to make amendments in the registration form you submitted, send an email to [email protected] with information on changes needed.

Registration Acceptance: There will be a period of 10 days to process the registration, assign students into classes, and contact parents/guardians with the acceptance letter and provide further information on the classes.

Student Fees: Out-of-province students or those who are on a Student or Visitor Visa must pay a $180.00 fee. Adjustments in the fees for siblings can be arranged. Parents & Guardians will be contacted with further information regarding the payment procedure.

Non-OCDSB Student Residency & Citizenship Verification: As per the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines, a verification of residence and citizenship status in Canada should be conducted for the completion of the registration process. Parents & Guardians will be contacted through email to book virtual appointments for the completion of the verification process. Please see the required registration documents below.

Required registration documents for Non-OCDSB Students:

  1. Proof of Address (e.g., Current Property Tax Bill; Current Utility Bill; Home Phone/Cable/Internet Bill. Please note, Driver’s License is not acceptable)
  2. Proof of Citizenship and Status in Canada:
  • Canadian Citizen (Birth Certificate, Passport, Baptismal Certificate)
  • Permanent Resident (Permanent Resident Card, Stage One Approval letter, Equivalent Documentation from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirming approval in principle)
  • Refugee Status: Documentation from IRCC confirming status, Consideration of eligibility (Convention refugee)
  • Diplomat Status / Minister’s Permit
  • Student Visa (Study Permit)
  • Visitor Visa (Visitor Record)
  • Copy of last year's day school Report Card - OEN
