Live and Work in Ottawa

When you think of Ottawa, you might imagine skating on the canal, tulips, Canada Day, and Parliament Hill. However, there is so much more to discover in this city and beyond.

Ottawa is Canada’s capital city and fourth largest urban region in this country. This beautiful city of trees, rivers and waterways sits on the unceded and unsurrendered land of the Algonquin people. It is not only home to the Algonquin Nation. Ottawa has the highest population of Inuit in Ontario, and Indigenous peoples from various First Nations and Métis communities reside here.

English and French are widely spoken and an important part of the culture. Ottawa is further enriched from expanding multiculturalism as generations of diverse families prosper and more people move here each year.

The city offers universities and colleges, leading health institutions, an expanding public transportation network, and excellent recreational facilities.

Getting outside is an important part of life in Ottawa. Walking, cycling and cross-country ski trails are plentiful. Only a short drive from the city you can enjoy beautiful nature trails in the Gatineau Hills or Ottawa Valley.

For fun, the city boasts unique Canadian flavours along with tastes from around the world (try some of the best shawarma in Canada or a delicious bowl of pho on a cold winter day).

We also have national museums, a vibrant art scene, concerts and festivals drawing some of the biggest names in music. Families can enjoy Winterlude in February, Tulipfest in the spring or the many celebrations of our various ethnic or 2SLGBTQ+ communities held through the year.

This short video from Ottawa Tourism provides a glimpse of some of the things you can do here:

Our staff tell us it is a wonderful place to work, live and play. And if you have kids, it’s a great city to raise a family.

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board serves students across the City of Ottawa. Our district covers 2,760 square kilometres. Members of our staff live in the city proper, nearby towns, rural communities and across the river in Gatineau, Quebec. Compared to larger cities in Canada, Ottawa is relatively affordable and offers shorter commute times.
