International Languages Secondary Program

2024-2025 International Language Classes for Secondary Students & Adults

The scope of the International Languages Secondary Program is to:

  • Promote plurilingualism and linguistic diversity, a valuable basis for courses in International Languages at the high school level (for credit)
  • Give secondary students and adult students the opportunity to learn or maintain a language other than English or French
  • Prepare students for post-secondary studies in the fields of business, trade and communications
  • Enhance student exchanges
  • Develop skills for national and international opportunities.

This school year, language classes will be offered virtually.

Language credit courses information

  1. Virtual Saturday Morning Classes (all students & adult learners)

    Program Duration: September 21, 2024 - June 14, 2025
    Time: Saturday mornings, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

  2. Virtual Evening Classes: Tamil (all students & adult learners)

    Program Duration: October 8, 2024 - May 6, 2025
    Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
    Registration is now CLOSED

  3. Virtual Evening Classes: American Sign Language, Arabic, Cantonese, German, Japanese, Russian, Sinhalese, Somali, and Spanish
    Program Duration:
     January 14, 2025 - June 5, 2025
    Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

How to Register:

  • OCDSB students: Must register through their Guidance Counselor
  • Non-OCDSB students (students from other Boards, international or out-of-province students, and adults): Students who are currently enrolled in a non-OCDSB day school.
    Please note: Verification of residence and citizenship status in Canada need to be completed virtually and parents/guardians or students will be contacted with further information.

Eligibility and Prerequisites:

  • The credit language courses are in three levels: BD (grade 10), CU (grade 11), and DU (grade 12). 
  • High school students (grades 9 to 12) and adults are eligible to take the language credit courses
  • Grade 9 students can only register in BD level language courses.  
  • CU and DU level courses have prerequisites (BD and CU respectively).  
  • Students in grade 11/12 who are newcomers and are interested in registering in the age appropriate level without the prerequisite will need to complete a form, provide evidence of credits completed in the target language and be assessed on their language competency.

Verification for non-OCDSB students:

As per the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines, a verification of residence and citizenship status in Canada should be conducted for the completion of the registration process. Parents & Guardians will be contacted through email to book virtual appointments for the completion of the verification process. Required documents are: 

  • Proof of Address (e.g. Current Property Tax Bill; Current Utility Bill; Home Phone/Cable/Internet Bill. Please note, Driver’s License is not acceptable)
  • Proof of Citizenship and Status in Canada: 
    • Canadian Citizen (Birth Certificate, Passport, Baptismal Certificate)
    • Permanent Resident (Permanent Resident Card, Stage One Approval letter, Equivalent Documentation from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirming approval in principle)
    • Refugee Status: Documentation from IRCC confirming status, Consideration of eligibility (Convention refugee)
    • Diplomat Status / Minister’s Permit
    • Student Visa (Study Permit)
    • Visitor Visa (Visitor Record)
  • Copy of most recent credit counseling summary transcript or student status sheet.

Fees:

  • International & Out-of-Province students & adults: $500.00
  • Adults Ontario residents (NOT working towards completion of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma): $50.00

Some language courses may require a Textbook deposit ($80.00).  Cash or cheque made payable to the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will be accepted.  A refund will be issued to students upon return of the textbook in satisfactory condition at the end of the course.  Textbook refund issues must be addressed within one calendar year of the commencement of the course.  Textbook deposit records are not retained beyond this time period.
