Arts at the OCDSB

There are many opportunities for students to get involved in the Arts, be it drama, music, dance, photography, creative writing and more. Arts opportunities are not only flourishing in our schools, but also in the greater community and through our Extra-curricular Creative Program through our Continuing Education services.

Don't hesitate to get involved in arts activities in your own local school. From the Capital Cappies to Off-Beat, our famous percussion troupe, to the World Voices Choir, all schools are creating unique and vibrant performance opportunities that serve to make students life-long devotees to the arts!

Secondary Schools

Canterbury High School

Did you know that Canterbury High School is nationally recognized for offering a Fine Arts Program designed for students with a high interest and ability in the arts and academics? An in-depth study of Dance, Drama, Literary Arts, Music, or Visual Arts is available for students who meet the entrance criteria. Auditions are held in the last week of January and first three weeks of February each year. Upon successful completion of the program, a student is awarded both a Fine Arts Certificate and a secondary school diploma. Lisgar Collegiate Institute

Lisgar's Fine Arts Department features one of the top secondary school symphony orchestras in Canada. Lisgar continues to achieve high standards at local, provincial and national festivals. Lisgar CI has not only a Full Band Program but also a Co-curricular Choral Program and one of the few remaining high school string programs (traditional violin, viola, cello and bass) in the city.

Earl of March Secondary School

The EOM arts department includes Visual Art, Music, Dance, and Drama. Earl of March is well-known for having an exceptional arts program in all areas. Students have numerous opportunities to participate in the arts, including visits to theNational Gallery of Canada, concert band performances, band trips, the dance showcaseand an annual field trip to the Stratford Festival. Music students who are enrolled in band classes perform a minimum of two concerts and entertain at local functions. Concert bands and jazz bands compete in regional and national competitions, and the end result is frequently the "Gold" standing.

Longfield Davidson-Heights Secondary School

Longfield Davidson has an outstanding instrumental music program featuring concert and jazz bands. Instrumental Music classes at LDHSS include standard band instrumentation: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, bass trombone, euphonium, tuba, bass, and percussion.

Sir Robert Borden High School

The SRB Fine Arts courses include Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Keyboarding (Piano), Band, Stage Band, Glee Club, Drama, Visual Arts and Digital Photography. All of the programs offered are delivered by exceptional teachers who challenge students to meet their full potential. Sir Robert Borden has won many medals and was sponsored by the Netherlands Embassy to visit the Van Gogh exhibition as winners in a Visual Arts competition. Sir Robert Borden provides students with a variety of program enhancements such as field trips to the National Gallery, band trips to New York City or Washington, musicals, a night photography field trip to parliament hill to name a few.

Music students who are enrolled in band classes perform three concerts for the community at large as well competes in regional and national competitions. The Fine Arts department at Sir Robert Borden High School truly demonstrates the three pillars of the school culture which are Respect, Appreciation and Perseverance.

Elementary & Intermediate Schools

Alta Vista Public School

The Alta Vista Strings Program is a two year grades 7 & 8 program where students are introduced to basics of string music ensemble playing and exposure to string music repertoire. Alta Vista is one of only three schools in the Ottawa region that offers a strings music program. Alta Vista is unique in the sense that all students from every walk of life and every socio-economic background have the opportunity to experience playing a stringed instrument. They also have the opportunity to perform in various ensembles which range from String Orchestra to String Quartets and Quintets.

Broadview Public School

The Broadview music program includes all students in Grade 7 and Grade 8. These students learn to play a variety of musical instruments including brass, woodwinds, percussion and more. Our extra-curricular program features a Grade 7 Concert Band, a Grade 7 Jazz Band, a Grade 8 Concert Band and a Grade 8 Jazz Band.

Longfield Davidson-Heights Imtermediate School

Intermediate students at LDHSS receive two 50 minute periods of instrumental music per week. In addition, LDH offers students the opportunity of joining four performance bands: Beginner Concert Band (Grade 7 students); Beginner Jazz Band (Grade 7 students); Senior Concert Band (Grade 8 students); and Gr. 8 Jazz Band (Audition required).

W.O. Mitchell Elementary School

The W.O. Mitchell music program includes all students in Grade 7 and Grade 8. These students learn to play a variety of musical instruments including flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, keyboard percussion, bass and percussion. Our extra-curricular program features a Grade 7/8 Concert Band.
