Advisors: Ms. Jen Pattison, Mr. Chris Dales
The OCDSB International Certificate Program is still running, despite the restrictions caused by the pandemic. There are still many opportunities to learn more about different cultures and global citizenship.
The OCDSB International Certificate Program is designed to recognize and honour students who demonstrate a commitment to being motivated, engaged, and active global citizens. Participants earn the certificate by:
- Studying an international language
- Taking internationally-focused classes
- Understanding global issues
- Participating in an internationally focused project of their choice
- And much more!
Visit the OCDSB's International Certificate Program website for detailed information, or speak to Ms. Pattison or Mr. Dales.

Congratulations to Lily Omakor, our only ICP graduate for 2022!
Some good news stories from two of our 2021 ICP grads...
Congratulations to Aria Mann, who is one of four students in the OCDSB to be awarded the Lynch-Getty student award by OCENET. This award is presented to students who have "...demonstrated leadership in their community and involvement in groups, events and activities that foster cross cultural learning and understanding in school and in the community."
Zoe Takacs has submitted an article about her ICP experience to the Manotick Messenger that is being featured in the current issue. This is also serving as her final reflection for the program. Well done, Zoe!
Congratulations to our 2020 ICP Graduates!
Once again South Carleton is proud to have 6 students graduating from the International Certificate Program. Congratulations to An Bui, Katie Collins, Owen Lok, Chelsea MacDonald, Amatur Rahman Salam-Alada, and Ava Stevenson.
Congratulations to Aria Mann. Aria attended the Jeju Youth Forum in Jeju, South Korea from October 31 to November 4, 2019. Their slogan is "Empower the youth, the leaders of the future". According to ICP supervisor Ms. Jen Pattison, "Aria was an amazing ambassador for our school, our Board, and our country."
Aria was one of 4 ICP students from across the OCDSB who attended the 10th annual Jeju International Youth Forum. Our students were the only Canadians within a group of 160 students who represented 29 different cities from around the world.
Aria worked with other students exploring the topic and possible solutions for “the global responsibility of poverty reduction and peace building.”

Requirements
To receive the Certificate, students must successfully complete the following three components and the summative portfolio task.
Component 1: International Languages and Intercultural Communication
This component requires you to complete one credit in a language other than English or French, and to participate in an intercultural awareness workshop.
Component 2: International Coursework
This component requires you to complete four grade 11 or 12 courses with a specified international focus, and to complete at least two major summative tasks with a specific internationalized focus in any other courses between grades 9 and 12. There is a list of courses with a specified international focus available on the OCDSB's International Certificate Program website.
Other credit courses may be eligible to meet the coursework requirements. Prior approval of your guidance counsellor, the International Certificate Adviser, and the International Education Coordinator is required. Courses not available at South Carleton may be completed via elearning.
Component 3: International Experience and Engagement
This component requires you to commit to an international experience and engagement of at least 100 hours (locally or abroad) between grades 9 and 12. This experience may be:
- a long-term international student exchange or study abroad program
- a series of short-term overseas experiences
- active engagement in local activities or organizations with an international focus
- a combination of the above options
The International Certificate Portfolio
After successfully completing the three required certificate components, you have the opportunity to demonstrate and reflect upon your commitment as a "global citizen" by compiling a portfolio. This will consist of the Student Learning Passport, a comprehensive log sheet that documents all the requirements of the three components; a Portfolio Presentation, eg. a multimedia presentation, an e-portfolio scrapbook, a photo essay, or other possibility; and finally a Personal Reflection.
