Science

Department Head: Mrs. Natalie Norbraten

The Science Department at South Carleton offers courses in general science, biology, chemistry and physics. General science courses in grade 9 and 10 are offered at the applied and academic levels.

Senior science courses are offered at the college and university levels. In addition, a continuation of the multidisciplinary curriculum in science is offered as a senior course at either the college or university level. The department uses a wide range of presentation and evaluation techniques, to suit all types of learning styles. Our aim is to promote three goals:

  • an understanding of basic science concepts
  • development of skills strategies and habits required for science inquiry
  • to relate science to the environment, society, and new technologies

Undergraduate awards are offered for the top mark in each science course. Graduate awards and bursaries are also offered.

The department encourages students to write physics and chemistry contests offered by the University of Waterloo - the Sir Isaac Newton contest for physics and the Avogadro contest for chemistry. These contests are written in May of each year. Other enrichment opportunities include the Ottawa Science Innovation Challenge and the Sanofi Biogenius Competition.
