Department Head: Ms. Emma Abbott
The Mathematics Department has enjoyed a long tradition of working with the students in our community. Courses are taught with consideration for the many levels of ability of our students. Students participate in the OCDSB summative tasks and exams prepared for Grade 10 Mathematics (MPM2D and MFM2P) as well as the senior math contests sponsored by the University of Waterloo*. Our Grade 9 students write the Ministry-mandated EQAO tests which are administered towards the end of each semester.
At the beginning of the course, teachers will detail the expectations of the course, subject material to be covered, and a statement of how the final mark is calculated. This information is available below.
The success of each student depends upon many factors, most important being the effort placed on the work for the course - including time spent doing homework on a regular basis. Extra help is always available and students should arrange for help with their teachers at a mutually convenient time. If required, a list of tutors (both peer and adult) is available through the Guidance Department.
Grade 9 and 10 math students have access to free interactive live online tutoring from Ontario certified math teachers. The tutoring component of Mathify is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and Sundays from 3:30 to 9:00pm. All other components of the site (i.e. the glossary, interactive tutorials, and best sessions) are available at all times. Students must create an individual user account by registering online. Parents, guardians and teachers may also access this site and login as a guest to view the various tools and virtual tutor chat rooms that are available.
