Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Programs allow high school students to take a concentration of courses that match their skills and interests. These programs are being offered at a variety of schools throughout the Board.
The following SHSMs are hosted at South Carleton:
Community Support Services (Health and Wellness SHSM)
Further your studies while exploring careers related to community support services such as geriatric services workers, youth workers, early childhood educators, and fitness trainers.

Digital Photography, Media and Imaging (Information and Communications Technology SHSM)
Focus your passion for media design and production using our advanced studios. You will develop skills used in a variety of industries: including graphic design, game design, animation,

Fabrication (Manufacturing SHSM)
Experience the fabrication and tool and die trade through on-site and in-class projects which focus on design, fabrication, and quality control standards as they relate to the manufacturing industry.

House Building (Construction SHSM)
Work with your teacher and a home-building company, where available, to construct/renovate a house, or build/modify other structures. Gain valuable hands-on experience while you learn traditional and advanced construction techniques.
Prerequisite: Students must be 16 years of age or older.

Automotive Service and Repair (Transportation SHSM)
Develop technical knowledge and skills as you study, test, service, and repair engine management systems; power trains; steering/control, suspension, brake, and body systems on automotive vehicles and/or small-engine products.

Eco Adventure Tourism (Hospitality and Tourism SHSM)
Our Hospitality Eco Adventure Tourism (HEAT) SHSM at South Carleton specializes in Active/Adventure/Recreation Travel at the local and regional levels. Employment opportunities exist in the Ottawa Carleton area and worldwide in this exciting employment sector. This program offers students the opportunity to expand their horizons and experience personal growth in the dynamic and ever changing world of adventure travel and sustainable tourism.
HEAT focuses on bundling active based courses (personal fitness, yoga and outdoor education), with marketing, entrepreneurial, and food and nutrition courses. Valuable Industry certificates will be offered in CPR/First Aid, WHMIS, Smart Serve and Service Excellence. The SHSM is supported by our dynamic cooperative education program.
